TGI Supports the Circular Economy by Making Use of Used Cooking Oil

PT Transportasi Gas Indonesia (TGI), a joint venture between PT PGN Tbk (Pertamina's gas subholding) and Transasia Company Pvt Ltd, worked with LAZ (Lembaga Amil Zakat, a zakat collection body) Rumah Sosial Kutub to hold the launch of the “Program Sekolah Tersenyum” (Smiling School Programme) at SMPN 8 Jakarta Pusat (22/09/2023). The “Sekolah Tersenyum” programme is a used cooking oil collection movement that aims to raise the awareness of primary school (Sekolah Dasar, SD) and junior secondary school (Sekolah Menengah Pertama, SMP) pupils in reducing the negative impact of used cooking oil on the environment. Without our realising it, the habit of pouring used cooking oil waste into drains has a negative impact on the environment and on aquatic ecosystems.

Under this programme, TGI, through its CSR assistance, provided used cooking oil collection facilities for 45 schools in the Jakarta Pusat administrative area, consisting of 1 Mini Storage unit and 10 jerry cans with a capacity of 18 litres at each school. The launch of this “Sekolah Tersenyum Jakarta Pusat” programme was carried out directly by the Mayor of Jakarta Pusat, Bapak Dhany Sukma S.Sos M.AP, witnessed by the Executive Director of Rumah Sosial Kutub, Bapak Suhito, and the Technical Director of TGI, Bapak Ibnu Asturrachman, together with the Corporate Secretary of TGI, Ibu Indah Pritanti. In his address, Dhany Sukma expressed appreciation to TGI and Rumah Sosial Kutub for working together to support the management of used cooking oil waste, particularly in the education sector in Jakarta Pusat. He also praised the spirit and enthusiasm of every school, which to date have succeeded in collecting 2.5 tonnes of used cooking oil.

The used cooking oil that has been collected will later be passed on to an internationally certified institution, where it will then be processed into biodiesel, a fuel that is more environmentally friendly. This is one way of implementing TGI's commitment to supporting SDG’s pillar 15, namely protecting terrestrial ecosystems, including waters as well. “We will also continue to encourage other circular economy activities in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment and to create sustainable environmental carrying capacity,” said the Technical Director of TGI, Ibnu Asturrachman, in his address.

On a separate occasion, the President Director of TGI, A.A.P Bagus Putra, added that this activity represents TGI's commitment to applying Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) values. “This programme is one of our CSR programmes, which aims to create a positive impact for society and the environment and is in line with TGI's role as a company that delivers natural gas, a good and environmentally friendly energy, to the public,” Bagus concluded.
